San Juan River (Nicaragua)
The San Juan River flows about 190 kilometres from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean, forming much of the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. With the lake it offered a natural route across Central America, guarded by the Spanish fortress of El Castillo, and during the California gold rush Cornelius Vanderbilt's company carried passengers along it. It was long studied as a route for an interoceanic canal.
