Sancho I of León

c. 935–966 · 10th century · Also known as Sancho the Fat

Sancho I, called the Fat, was King of León from 956 to 958 and again from 960 to 966. Deposed by the nobility, he travelled with his grandmother Queen Toda of Navarre to Córdoba, where the Jewish physician Hasdai ibn Shaprut treated his obesity, and with the help of the caliph Abd al-Rahman III he regained his throne. He was poisoned in 966, reportedly by a Galician count.
