São Luís is a port city on the island of Maranhão in northern Brazil. It was founded in 1612 by the French as Fort Saint-Louis, centre of Equinoctial France, and taken by the Portuguese in 1615. The Dutch held it from 1641 to 1644. It was the capital of the State of Maranhão and, after the capital moved to Belém, of the later State of Maranhão and Piauí.
