Saumacus

fl. c. 108 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Saumacus was a Scythian who led a revolt in the Bosporan Kingdom around 108 BCE, in which the last Spartocid king, Paerisades V, was killed. The rising is known from an inscription honouring Diophantus, the general of Mithridates VI of Pontus, who crushed it, captured Saumacus and sent him to Pontus. The revolt led to the kingdom's incorporation into the realm of Mithridates.
