Sayfawa dynasty
The Sayfawa dynasty was the ruling house of Kanem and later Bornu around Lake Chad, which claimed descent from Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan. It ruled for many centuries, making it one of the longest-lasting dynasties in African history, until it was displaced in the nineteenth century. Accounts of the Kanem-Bornu Empire credit the dynasty's continuity with providing stable royal legitimacy under the title of mai.
