Schmalkaldic War

1546–1547 · 16th century

The Schmalkaldic War of 1546–1547 was fought between Emperor Charles V and the Schmalkaldic League of Lutheran princes and cities in the Holy Roman Empire. Allied with the Protestant Duke Maurice of Saxony, Charles defeated and captured Elector John Frederick of Saxony at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. The electoral title and much territory passed to Maurice, but Protestantism survived and was recognised in 1555.
