Second Battle of Dongola

652 · 7th century · Also known as Siege of Old Dongola, Siege of Dongola (652)

The Second Battle of Dongola was the siege of Old Dongola, capital of the Nubian kingdom of Makuria, by the Arab army of Abdallah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh, governor of Egypt, in 652. The Arabs bombarded the city with a catapult and damaged its church, but Nubian archers inflicted heavy losses and the city held. The siege ended with the Baqt treaty, which left Makuria independent for six centuries.
