Old Dongola
Old Dongola, known in Nubian as Tungul, is an abandoned town on the east bank of the Nile in northern Sudan, the capital of the Christian kingdom of Makuria from about the 6th to the 14th century. Its ruins include churches, palaces and the royal throne hall, which was converted into a mosque in 1317. The town declined after the fall of Makuria and was abandoned in the 20th century.
