Faras
Faras, ancient Pachoras, was a town on the Nile in Lower Nubia, near the modern border between Egypt and Sudan, now submerged by Lake Nasser. It was the capital of the kingdom of Nobadia and later the seat of a bishop under Makuria. Polish archaeologists led by Kazimierz Michałowski uncovered its cathedral in the 1960s, rescuing over a hundred wall paintings of the 8th to 14th centuries, now in Warsaw and Khartoum.
