Sheng Shicai

1897–1970 · 20th century

Sheng Shicai was a Chinese warlord who ruled Xinjiang from 1933 to 1944. Relying on Soviet military and economic support, he crushed the First East Turkestan Republic and other rebels, while running a harsh police state. In 1942 he turned to the Nationalist government, purging Soviet advisers and Communists. Resentment against his rule helped spark the Ili Rebellion of 1944.
