Silvio Pellico

1789–1854 · 19th century

Silvio Pellico was an Italian writer and patriot from Saluzzo in Piedmont. Arrested in Milan in 1820 for his links with the Carbonari, he spent ten years in Austrian prisons, mostly in the Spielberg fortress at Brno. His memoir of imprisonment, Le mie prigioni (1832), was read across Europe and damaged Austria's reputation in Italy.
