Joseph Radetzky von Radetz was an Austrian field marshal of Bohemian birth who served as chief of staff in the campaigns of 1813–1814 against Napoleon. Commanding in Lombardy-Venetia, he withdrew from Milan in the revolution of 1848, defeated Piedmont-Sardinia at Custoza in 1848 and Novara in 1849, and recovered Venice. He governed Lombardy-Venetia until 1857, and Johann Strauss I's Radetzky March honours him.
