Sinhala language
Sinhala is the Indo-Aryan language of the Sinhalese people and one of the official languages of Sri Lanka, written in its own script. Descended from the speech of settlers from northern India in the 1st millennium BCE, it developed apart from related languages and absorbed influences from Pali, Sanskrit and Tamil, and later from Portuguese, Dutch and English. Its literature goes back more than a thousand years.
