Skibbereen
Skibbereen is the largest town in West Cork, Ireland, on the River Ilen. It grew in the 17th century in a district long held by Gaelic families such as the O'Driscolls, MacCarthys and O'Donovans. The town and its surroundings suffered some of the worst mortality of the Great Famine of 1845–1852, and its name became a byword for the disaster.
