Anglo-Normans

The Anglo-Normans were the medieval descendants of the Normans who ruled England after the conquest of 1066, together with the French-speaking aristocracy they formed there. From 1169 Anglo-Norman lords, invited by the deposed Leinster king Diarmait Mac Murchada, invaded Ireland, and Henry II's arrival in 1171 began English royal lordship over the island. They built castles, founded towns and took much of the east and south from Irish kings.
