Bangor Abbey

c. 558 · 6th century

Bangor Abbey was a monastery on the southern shore of Belfast Lough in County Down, Northern Ireland, founded by Saint Comgall around 558. It became one of the great schools of early Irish Christianity, sending out missionaries such as Columbanus and producing the Antiphonary of Bangor. Viking raids devastated it in the 9th century.
