Slavery Abolition Act 1833

1833 · 19th century

The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 was an Act of the British Parliament that abolished slavery in most of the British Empire. It provided for an apprenticeship period and compensated slave owners, not the enslaved. Accounts of the British Empire treat abolition as one of the major changes in the empire's history.
