Society of Berbice

1720–1795 · 18th century · Also known as Sociëteit van Berbice

The Society of Berbice was a company of Amsterdam investors formed in 1720 to own and run the Dutch colony of Berbice, in present-day Guyana, after the colony had been ransomed from a French raid in 1712. It governed the plantation colony under a charter from the Dutch state through most of the 18th century, including during the great slave uprising of 1763, until British occupation in the 1790s.
