Sohar

Also known as Suhar

Sohar is a port city on the Batinah coast of northern Oman. In the early Islamic centuries it was one of the great ports of the Indian Ocean trade, linking the Gulf with India, East Africa and China, and it is often linked with the stories of Sindbad the Sailor. Ahmad ibn Said, founder of the Al Said dynasty, was its governor before becoming imam in the 1740s. It is now a major industrial port.
