Al Bu Said dynasty

1744– · 18th century · Also known as Al Said, Busaidi dynasty

The Al Bu Said dynasty has ruled Oman since the 1740s, when Ahmad ibn Said expelled the Persians and was elected imam in place of the Ya'aruba. Its sultans built a maritime empire from Muscat and Zanzibar over the Swahili coast; after 1856 the family split into separate Omani and Zanzibari lines, the latter overthrown in 1964.
