Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning
Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning, was Governor-General of India from 1856 to 1862 and became the first Viceroy when the Crown took over from the East India Company in 1858. He governed during the rebellion of 1857, when his refusal to permit indiscriminate reprisals earned him the nickname 'Clemency Canning'. In 1861 his arbitration, the Canning Award, confirmed the separation of Zanzibar from Oman.
