Solomon I of Imereti

1735–1784 · 18th century

Solomon I was king of Imereti in western Georgia from 1752 to 1784, with an interruption in the 1760s. He defeated an Ottoman army in 1757, curbed the power of his great vassals and banned the slave trade that had drained the kingdom's population. Allied with Erekle II of Kartli-Kakheti, he fought alongside Russia in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774, after which Ottoman control over Imereti weakened.
