Sonnō jōi

Sonnō jōi, meaning revere the emperor, expel the barbarians, was a political slogan of the late Tokugawa period. It united opposition to the shogunate's concessions to Western powers. Accounts of the Tokugawa Shogunate treat the movement as a force behind the overthrow of the shogunate.
