Søren Kierkegaard

1813–1855 · 19th century

Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher and theologian, regarded as the first existentialist. Writing often under pseudonyms, in works such as "Either/Or" (1843) and "Fear and Trembling" (1843), he explored faith, choice, anxiety and the individual's relation to God. In his last years he attacked the established Danish church. His ideas became widely influential in the twentieth century.
