Sosloviye
Sosloviye was the term for the legal estates of the Russian Empire, introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries to approximate Europe's estates of the realm. The Code of Laws of 1832 defined four: the nobility and the clergy, who paid no personal tax, and the town-dwellers and the peasants, who did; the peasants, the great majority, supplied the army's conscripts. The inorodtsy, non-Russian peoples of Siberia, Central Asia and the Caucasus, were treated apart. After serfdom was abolished the estates no longer matched society, but the terms lasted until the revolution of 1917.
