Southern Movement (Yemen)
The Southern Movement, or al-Hirak, is a political movement in southern Yemen that began in 2007 with protests by retired southern officers and civil servants against discrimination after the 1994 civil war. It grew into a broad campaign, partly for autonomy and largely for the restoration of an independent southern state. Many of its leaders later joined the Southern Transitional Council.
