Southern Netherlands
The Southern Netherlands were the provinces of the Low Countries that remained under Habsburg rule after the Dutch Revolt, corresponding roughly to modern Belgium and Luxembourg. Ruled by Spain until 1714 and then by Austria, they were also called the Spanish and Austrian Netherlands. The Dutch Republic garrisoned barrier fortresses there after 1715, and France annexed the region in 1795.
