Dutch Revolt
The Dutch Revolt was the uprising of the Netherlands against Spanish Habsburg rule that began in the 1560s and led to the independence of the Dutch Republic. It drained the resources of the Spanish Empire, and because Portugal was united with the Spanish crown from 1580 to 1640, Portuguese overseas possessions became targets of Dutch attack, weakening the Portuguese Empire.
