Union of Utrecht

1579 · 16th century · Part of the Dutch Revolt

The Union of Utrecht was an alliance signed in January 1579 by the northern provinces of the Netherlands, led by Holland and Zeeland, to fight together against Spanish rule. It promised mutual defence and freedom of conscience. Although meant as a military pact, it became in effect the constitution of the Dutch Republic until 1795.
