UNITA

1966 · 20th century · Also known as National Union for the Total Independence of Angola

UNITA, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, is an Angolan movement founded in 1966 by Jonas Savimbi, with its strongest support among the Ovimbundu of the central highlands. It fought the Portuguese and then, with South African and United States support, the MPLA government in the Angolan civil war. After Savimbi was killed in 2002 a peace agreement ended the war, and UNITA became the main opposition party.
