Union of Arras

1579 · 16th century · Part of the Dutch Revolt

The Union of Arras was an agreement of 6 January 1579 by which the Catholic southern provinces of Artois and Hainaut, with the towns of Walloon Flanders, declared their loyalty to Philip II of Spain during the Dutch Revolt. It led to a formal reconciliation with the king in May 1579 and prompted the northern provinces to form the Union of Utrecht, foreshadowing the division of the Low Countries.
