St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda
St. John's is the capital and main port of Antigua, on the island's north-west coast. Laid out by English settlers in the 17th century, it was for long periods the seat of the governor-in-chief of the Leeward Islands colony, while the naval base at English Harbour protected the island. It became the capital of independent Antigua and Barbuda in 1981.
