St Ninian's Isle
St Ninian's Isle is a small island off the west coast of mainland Shetland, joined to it by a sand bar. In 1958 excavations at its ruined chapel uncovered the St Ninian's Isle Treasure, a hoard of 28 silver objects, including bowls and penannular brooches, buried around 800. It is the finest surviving collection of Pictish metalwork and is held by the National Museum of Scotland.
