St Magnus Cathedral

1137 · 12th century

St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney, was founded in 1137 by Earl Rögnvald Kali Kolsson in honour of his uncle, the martyred Earl Magnus. Built in red and yellow sandstone in the Romanesque style, it is the most northerly cathedral in Britain and the finest surviving building of the Norse period in Scotland. The relics of both Magnus and Rögnvald were found in its pillars.
