St Johns River
The St Johns River is the longest river in Florida, flowing north for about 500 km before turning east to the Atlantic near Jacksonville. Jean Ribault named it the River of May in 1562, and in 1564 French Huguenots built Fort Caroline near its mouth, destroyed by the Spanish in 1565. The river was a major route for the Timucua and later for colonial trade.
