Timucua

The Timucua were a Native American people of northern Florida and south-eastern Georgia, divided into many chiefdoms that spoke dialects of the Timucua language. They met French Huguenots at Fort Caroline in 1564 and from the late 16th century were drawn into the Spanish Franciscan mission system. Epidemics, wars and slave raids by the English and their allies reduced them sharply, and they had largely disappeared by the late 18th century.
