Stabat Mater

13th century · 13th century

The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Christian hymn to the Virgin Mary. It portrays her suffering as a mother at the crucifixion of her son, Jesus. Its title comes from its first line. The hymn has long been ascribed to the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230–1306), and also to Pope Innocent III.
