Pope Innocent III

1161–1216 · 12th century · Also known as Lotario dei Conti di Segni

Pope Innocent III, born Lotario dei Conti di Segni, led the Church from 1198 to 1216 and was one of the most powerful medieval popes. He reasserted papal rule over central Italy, including Spoleto, launched the Fourth Crusade, which instead took Constantinople in 1204, and called the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. He sent a crown to Kaloyan of Bulgaria, supported the Livonian crusade and the Brothers of the Sword, and held the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215.
