Person
Pope Innocent II
Pope Innocent II, born Gregorio Papareschi, was pope from 1130 to 1143. His election was contested by the antipope Anacletus II, and with the support of Bernard of Clairvaux and the emperor Lothair III he prevailed after a long schism. He held the Second Lateran Council in 1139, and in his last years the Roman commune rose against papal rule.
