Albigensian Crusade

1209–1229 · 13th century · Also known as Cathar Crusade

The Albigensian Crusade was a war called by Pope Innocent III against the Cathar heretics of Languedoc and the lords who protected them, chiefly the Count of Toulouse. Northern French barons under Simon de Montfort took Béziers and Carcassonne in 1209. The Treaty of Paris of 1229 placed the region under the French crown.
