Stabiae
Stabiae was an ancient town on the Bay of Naples, at modern Castellammare di Stabia. Destroyed by Sulla in 89 BCE during the Social War, it became a resort of large seaside villas, which were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Pliny the Elder died on its shore while trying to rescue people from the eruption. Villas such as the Villa San Marco and the Villa Arianna have been excavated.
