Gulf of Salerno

The Gulf of Salerno is an inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Campania, southern Italy, between the Sorrento peninsula and the Cilento coast. Its shores held the Greek city of Poseidonia (Paestum) and later Salerno. In 268 BCE Rome resettled part of the conquered Picentes of the Adriatic coast there, and in 1943 the Allies landed on its beaches.
