Stainmore

Also known as Stainmore Pass

Stainmore is a high pass across the Pennines between the Eden valley in Cumbria and Teesdale, followed by a Roman road and the modern A66. In the early Middle Ages it marked a frontier of the Northumbrian and Cumbrian lands, and the stump of the Rey Cross stands on the summit. According to later tradition, the last Norse king of York, Eric Bloodaxe, was killed there in 954.
