States of Germany
The states of Germany, or Länder, are the sixteen federated states of the Federal Republic of Germany, each with its own constitution, parliament and government. They hold powers over education, policing and culture and take part in federal law-making through the Bundesrat. East Germany abolished its five Länder in 1952, and they were re-established in 1990 just before reunification.
