Stavelot Triptych

c. 1156–1158 · 12th century

The Stavelot Triptych is a portable reliquary altarpiece of gilded copper and enamel made by Mosan goldsmiths at the abbey of Stavelot around 1156 to 1158, probably for Abbot Wibald. It enclosed relics of the True Cross, and its enamel scenes tell the legend of the Cross under Constantine and Helena. It is now in the Morgan Library in New York.
