Strength Through Joy

1933–1945 · 20th century · Also known as Kraft durch Freude

Strength Through Joy was the leisure organisation of the German Labour Front, founded in November 1933. It offered workers cheap holidays, cruises, concerts, sport and theatre, aiming to win support for the regime and raise productivity, and it began the giant seaside resort of Prora on Rügen. The Volkswagen car was first promoted as the KdF-Wagen, after the organisation's German initials.
