Stroganov family

Also known as Stroganovs

The Stroganovs were a family of Russian merchants and industrialists who grew rich from salt, furs and trade in the Perm region in the 16th century. Ivan IV granted them vast lands on the Kama, and they hired the Cossack leader Yermak, whose expedition of 1581–82 began the Russian conquest of Siberia. Later members became barons and counts and were noted patrons of art.
