Sturlung Age
The Sturlung Age was a period of violent conflict in Iceland in the 13th century, named after the powerful Sturlung family. A few great chieftain families fought for supremacy, in battles such as Örlygsstaðir in 1238, while the Norwegian king Haakon IV encouraged their rivalry. It ended when the Icelanders submitted to Norway under the Old Covenant of 1262-1264.
