Sultan Kudarat

c. 1581–1671 · 17th century · Also known as Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat

Sultan Kudarat was ruler of the Sultanate of Maguindanao on Mindanao from about 1619 to 1671. He united much of Mindanao, resisted Spanish expansion and survived the expedition of Governor Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, who took his fortress at Lamitan in 1637. He later made peace with Spain on equal terms, and he is honoured as a national hero of the Philippines.
