Sverre of Norway

c. 1150–1202 · 12th century · Also known as Sverre Sigurdsson, Sverre Sigurdsson of Norway

Sverre Sigurdsson was King of Norway from 1184 to 1202, having led the Birkebeiner faction in the civil wars from 1177. Claiming to be a son of King Sigurd Munn, he defeated his rival Magnus Erlingsson and strengthened royal power against the church, which excommunicated him. His career is told in Sverris saga, written partly under his own direction.
